The Enterprise That Can Remember
Organizational memory is not a repository. It is the ability to make a past interaction improve a future decision.
Memory has to change action
Enterprises have more stored information than ever and remarkably little memory. Documents accumulate, customer histories fragment and lessons are rediscovered by each new team.
Real organizational memory is not retrieval alone. It is the ability to carry relevant context into a later decision, preserve why an exception was made and allow an outcome to update what happens next.
AI makes retrieval easier. That raises the standard. The strategic question becomes whether the enterprise can turn recalled information into coherent action across functions.
A practical test
Follow one important customer signal. Does it reach the people who can act? Does the action become visible to the rest of the system? Does the result change the next decision? If any link breaks, the organization stores data but does not learn.
The decision is to build memory around consequences, not archives.
